Hertha Carrothers, 83, of New Philadelphia, died on Saturday, February 14, 2004 at Union Hospital in Dover after a long illness.She was born in Germany and grew up in China, where her father was a civil engineer and construction superintendent on railroad and bridge projects. When she was 16, her father died and her mother took her back to Germany, where she finished school and became a pharmacist. After the war, she worked for the U. S. military in Heidelberg and moved to New Philadelphia in 1948. Mrs. Carrothers was well-known in this area as the long-time proprietor of R. F. Carrothers and Son, founded by her father-in-law, Roy Carrothers, and later as the branch manager of Glendale Welding Supply and AGA Gas. During her career in the welding supply industry, Mrs. Carrothers treated everyone with compassion and generosity, and was always willing to help those less fortunate.She is survived by her children, sons Robert (Julie) Carrothers and Bruce Carrothers and her daughter, Gisela Moriarty; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. At her request there will be no services.Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, 233 W.
