Herbert Monroe Spencer, 81, of New Philadelphia, died, Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Union Hospital in Dover.A son of the late Herman and Bessie Mae (Jones) Spencer, Herbert was born April 29, 1923 in Blue, West Virginia.He was raised in Uhrichsville and was a 1941 graduate of Uhrichsville High School. In 1964, he moved to New Philadelphia.Herbert enlisted with the United States Navy on March 30, 1943. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Santee Air Craft Carrier as a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class. During his service to his country, Herbert was awarded the Silver Star and four Battles Stars.In 1984, he retired from Alsco in Gnadenhutten as a machinist. Also, as a former employee of several local clay companies, Herbert was involved with the original Clay Week Festival in UhrichsvilleHe was a member of Roxford United Methodist Church. He was a member of Keeping in Touch Senior’s as well as a Field Director for NCHA. Herbert also enjoyed singing and playing his guitar at church and various nursing homes.He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen M. (Staneart) Spencer, whom he married on November 18, 1942 in Greenup, Kentucky; daughters, Susan Y. (Spencer) Crim of New Philadelphia and Deanna M. Spencer (Allen Maybaugh) of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Brian M. (Jessica) Crim of West Chester, Ohio and Lori M. Crim of New Philadelphia; great-granddaughter, Faith M. Crim of West Chester, Ohio; sister, Nina Ronald of New Philadelphia; brother, Calvin (Rita) Spencer of Pahoa, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edwin Spencer.Visitation will be Saturday, March 26, 2005 from 4 to 7 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service on Monday in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory in New Philadelphia. Services will be conducted by Rev. Henry Mooney on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Gnadenhutten Clay Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
