Herbert Lawson Phillips

Herbert Lawson Phillips, age 84 of New Philadelphia died Wednesday, September 25, 2013, under the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.

A son of the late Ralph and Doris (Everhart) Phillips, Herb, as he was known to family and friends, was born at Dover, Ohio on November 1, 1928.

He was a graduate of Dover High School and attended The Ohio State University prior to joining the family business, the former Phillips Coal Company at Massillon. He later attended IBM school and began working for Associated Grocers at Dennison for 30 years prior to his official retirement in 1995. Herb continued to serve the company as a part-time consultant until the age of 72.

Herb was a long-time member of Jerusalem Church. Through the years, He enjoyed working his small family farm, woodworking, gardening and had a great interest in tools, which allowed him to create or fix just about anything. Additionally, he was an avid traveler having had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and Europe.

He will be missed by his wife of nearly 60 years, the former Nellie Kline; three sons, David (Kimberly) Phillips of New Philadelphia, Gregg (Tina) Phillips, of North Canton, and Tom (Eleanor) Phillips of Canton and a sister, Marilyn Risley of Californina.

Completing the family are six grandchildren, Kyle (Lindsey) Phillips, Tyler Phillips, Jennifer (Brian) Menefee, Michele Phillips, Charles and Christopher Phillips; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Phillips and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Frank Sapp, Jr. will lead a service celebrating Herb’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Dover Burial Park. Following services, all are invited to join the family in the Hospitality Room of the Dover Geib Center for a time of food and fellowship.

Memorial contributions in Herb’s name may be directed to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
