Herbert Arnett, 95, of Dover, passed away in Aultman Hospital at Canton on October 19, 2023.

Born on May 30, 1928 in Mannington, West Virginia, Herb attended a one-room school for the
first six grades, which was located in the oil fields of West Virginia where his father worked.

After graduating from Unidis High School in West Milford, W Va., Herb attended Potomac State
College for two years before transferring to Marshall University in Huntington.

Upon graduating from Marshall University in 1951 with a B.A in Education, Herb was drafted
into the United States Army during the Korean War where he served as a staff intelligence officer
working with guided missiles and anti-aircraft units as well as participating in atomic bomb tests
in 1953. Herb was discharged from the Army in 1954 and took up studies at West Virginia
University, graduating in 1955 with a M.A. in Education.

Herb’s career in education started in 1955 at Conesville High School in Conesville, OH. where
he taught for four years before being hired as principal for Keene High School in Keene, OH in
1959. Herb served as principal at Keene until 1963 before moving on to serve in the same
capacity at Three Rivers High School in Roscoe OH - these districts would later become part of
the River View Local School District.

In April 1966, Herb was hired by the Ohio Department of Education as an Area Coordinator for
East Central Ohio, initially covering four counties and eventually expanding to cover eleven
counties. Herb worked out of Coshocton until 1974, when his office was moved to New
Philadelphia where worked until 2014 before retiring with a total 59 years of service.

Herb was very proud of his West Virginia heritage and enjoyed telling people when the dumbest
people moved to Ohio from West Virginia, it raised the average IQ for both states. He enjoyed
going to local football games and was a huge WVU fan. Herb had an appreciation of music and
always had 1940’s big band playing his car. He was an avid wood craftsman making many
pieces of furniture and knick knacks for family and friends. Herb was also an animal lover and
loved hanging with his cat or visiting his grand dogs. Herb loved to golf, and was fortunate
enough to enjoy the game well up in years.

Herb married Sally Ann (Mills) Arnett in 1958 enjoying over 51 years of marriage before her
passing in 2009. Herb is survived by two sons, Shannon (wife Suzanne), of Columbus, and
Matthew (wife Juli) of Dover and three grandchildren, Noah, Max and Zoie.
