Helen V. Herman

June 25, 1914 — August 16, 2005

Helen V. Herman, 91, of New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover, and a lifetime resident of New Philadelphia, died peacefully surrounded by her family late Tuesday evening, August 16, 2005. Born June 25, 1914 at New Philadelphia, she was one of eleven children born to the late Leo and Lucy Weber Gowins. Helen was a very gifted lady and was blessed with musical talent. From teaching others to play the piano during her for more than twenty years as a pianist to singing in her church chancel choir for more than five decades, she shared her talent with others, and to glorify God. A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, she attended the Homebuilders Sunday School Class, was active in United Methodist Women’s ministries, and was a member of the former Morning Circle as well.An avid quilter, she gave generously to her family the works of art that she wrought, and participated in various quilting guilds. She also crafted dolls together with her sister, June. Mrs. Herman was a member of the Fort Nightly Music Club and its Past President’s Assembly. She was also an advisor to the Jr. Fort Nightly Music Club and was instrumental in the club earning federation membership. Many will remember Helen for her famous Zupha bread, which she loved to bake and share with her friends and neighbors. On March 8, 1936, Helen married Harold Herman. The couple met at a Box Social and spent the next fifty-seven years together until his death on May 1, 1995. Together, they raised a daughter, Marylin J. (Terry) Carpenter, of New Philadelphia; and two sons, Greg Herman and the late Jerry Herman.She’ll be missed by five grandchildren, including two Tuscarawas County residents, Douglas (Teri Lynn) Carpenter of New Philadelphia, and Christopher (Beth) Carpenter of Bolivar; four great-grandchildren; and her sister, June Fisher of Massillon.In addition to her parents, husband, and son, two infant children and 10 brothers and sisters precede her in death. Visitation will be held Friday, August 19, 2005 from 5-8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Mrs. Herman’s life will be held Saturday in the funeral home’s chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park.
