Helen T. Pompey, age 97, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in Park Village Health Care Center at Dover.
Born at New Philadelphia, Ohio on June 22, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Borbat) Strimbu.
She was a 1934 New Philadelphia High School graduate. On June 20, 1936, Helen married Louis S. Pompey and as a couple reared seven children, and celebrated nearly 57 years of marriage prior to his passing on June 4, 1993.
Helen was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was an active member of the Altar Society, and Senior Citizens. She was also active with AARP of New Philadelphia, the New Philadelphia VFW Ladies Auxiliary and served as the secretary for the United Steel Workers Retiree’s Club. She retired from Union Hospital at Dover following 15 years of service as a baker.
In her younger years, Helen enjoyed bowling playing cards, baking and cooking and was known for her Sunday morning breakfasts, in which she fed anyone who would show up to eat.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret (Stephen) Kovach of Pennsylvania, Jeannie (Ken) Haney of New Philadelphia and Patricia Grove of Dover; three sons, Leonard “Butch” (Patty) Pompey, Dan (Janet) Pompey and Joe (Vicki) Pompey all of New Philadlephia.
Sixteen grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and a sister-in-law, Emma Strimbu of New Philadelphia complete the family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Peanut” Pompey; three sisters, Silvia Raymond, Nellie Schoelles, and Anna Hunter; a brother, Charles Strimbu, Jr. and a great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 13, 2013 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Father Jeff Coning will lead a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11:30 AM in the Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the service, all are invited to join the family in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home, for a meal and fellowship.
