Hazel Leona Erwin, 83, of Park Village Health Care Center in Dover, formerly of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday afternoon, September 7, 2004. Born in New Philadelphia January 15, 1921, she was a daughter of the late William and Helen Neighbor Huff. Hazel spent her entire life in New Philadelphia, and after attending school here, she met and married her husband, the late Charles O. “Chick” Erwin who died July 7, 1977. Hazel was a former member of the New Philadelphia Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed her friendships with people she came to know from her job as a bartender at the former New Philadelphia Moose Lodge. She endeared herself to many who called her “Aunt Hazel” a testimony to her ability to make people feel at ease within her presence. When not traveling with friends and enjoying the company of her family, Hazel could be found crocheting afghans for relatives. She leaves behind two daughters, Pamela (Fred) Warfield and Patti (Steve) Charles, all of New Philadelphia, a son; Jon R. (Charla) Erwin of Gnadenhutten; a daughter-in-law Cora Erwin of New Philadelphia, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, Garnet (Nora) Huff of New Philadelphia. In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel is preceded in death by two sons, Charles W. “Chick” Erwin, and Russell T. Erwin; and five sisters and brothers; Ralph Huff Sr., Hilda Scott, Opal Rice, Roland Huff and George Huff. Friends are invited to call Friday evening from 5 to 8 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory of New Philadelphia. Pastor Adam Frye of the Bethel Worship Center will lead a funeral celebrating Hazel’s life at 10:30 Saturday morning in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow at East Avenue Cemetery.
