Hazel J. Polen, 81, of New Philadelphia, died Monday morning, December 15, 2003, at Union Hospital in Dover.An adopted daughter of the late Harry and Elizabeth Weiss, Hazel was born July 9, l922, in Martinsville, OH, and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Canton.She is survived by her husband, Robert D. Polen, with whom she celebrated fifty-three years of marriage in July of this year; a daughter, Paula (Kevin) VanGaasbeck of Fresno, CA; two sons, Michael R. Polen of New Philadelphia and Gary (Connie) Snyder of Pasagola, MS; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Rothgary of Lakewood, OH; and a niece, Barbara Mast of New Philadelphia.In addition to her parents, two sisters and a brother are deceased.Services for Hazel will be in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel on Thursday evening, December 18, 2003, at 7:00 pm, with the Rev. Vincent Bagley officiating. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday evening prior to the service. Those unable to attend may sign the online guest registry, send a condolence to the family, and read a memorial of Hazel’s life on the funeral home’s website. A private family graveside committal service will follow on Friday in Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia.The family requests poinsettias as floral tributes. These will be distributed to area churches, nursing homes, and the hospital following the funeral service.
