Harold R. May

Harold R. “Rocco” May Jr., 69, of Dover, died Saturday, November 10, 2012 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

A son of Norma Lee (Rausch) May and the late Harold R. May Sr., Harold was born October 16, 1943 at Dover, Ohio.

Harold graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1962. Then two years later, on Valentine’s Day of 1964, he married the love of his life, the former Evelyn Hall, in the United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia.

He was employed at Greer Steel as a machine operator and retired after 33 years of service. He also was a former employee of Owens & Illinois at Berlin, Tolloti Pipe at Uhrichsville and Special Packaging at Strasburg.

Harold enjoyed the outdoors and he especially enjoyed fishing and boating on his pontoon at Atwood Lake. He also enjoyed watching sports on television and attending the sporting events of his granddaughters. He had quite a sweet tooth with some of his favorite foods being cherry pie, ice cream and Hershey Chocolate Bars. Most of all, Harold will be remembered for his generous personality and his desire to put the needs of others first.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of the home; a daughter, Vicky (Glen) Maurer of New Philadelphia; a son, Dale May of the home; two granddaughters, Amanda and Alison Maurer both of New Philadelphia; his siblings, Jim (Sue) May of New Philadelphia, Robert May of Lancaster, Ohio, Pat Vanaski of San Francisco and William May of Dover; a sister-in-law, Toni May of Dover and several nieces and nephews. Harold will also be missed by his dear companion, his bird, Sparky.

Harold was preceded in death by his father,a sister, Sandra Davidson and a brother Charles May.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. A memorial service celebrating Harold’s life will follow in the funeral center at 6 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Steven Bailey officiating.
