Harold Joseph “Bud” Demattio, age 76, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.

Born on December 16, 1935, at Brightwood, Bud was the son of the late Joseph and Hilda (Mathers) Demattio; he grew up just down the road at Midvale and attended the former Midvale High School.

Bud married the former Shiela Evans in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, at New Philadelphia on January 25, 1958, and together raised three children.

For many years, Bud was an active member of Sacred Heart Church and participated in the Adoration. For more than 50 years, he was a member of the Tuscarawas County Coin Club, serving many years as the club president.

Other involvements included being a member of the Tuscarawas County Historical Society, the Tuscarawas Stamp Club, New Philadelphia Elks Lodge B.P.O. #510, and served for many years on the Tuscarawas County Democratic Board of Elections. Bud was also a co-founder of the Cellar Dwellers Wine Club and made and bottled his own wine for a number of years.

He worked for the former Evans Brick at Midvale prior to joining the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 11, where he worked as a road inspector prior to his retirement in the mid 1990’s.

His grandchildren knew him as “Pops” and as his health would allow, he enjoyed attending their sporting events and activities. As a grandparent, he was proud of every one of their individual accomplishments.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, Bud is survived by two children; a daughter, Lori Demattio of New Philadelphia and a son, William “Bill” (wife, Sharon) Demattio of Norman, Oklahoma; a daughter-in-law, Raeann (husband, Roy) Montan of Dover; four beloved grandchildren, Joey, Max, Sami and Charlie.

Completing the family are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Marlene (Anthony) Grimaldi of Leesburg, Virginia, Jack (Becky) Evans of Norman, Oklahoma, Cindi (Eric) Swartzwelder, of Dover, and Fritz Trimmer of New Philadelphia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by a son, David James Demattio, and a sister, Joyce Trimmer.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with a Christian Wake service beginning at 12:30 PM. Father Jeff Coning will celebrate a mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 1:00 PM in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
