Harold Beecher Black, 82, of Strasburg, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 in Hennis Care Centre at Dover following a brief illness.A son of the late Harold Beecher Black Sr. and the late Frances Ermin (Wood) Black, Harold was born August 11, 1926 at Columbus, Ohio.Harold graduated from South High School at Columbus, Ohio in 1944 and then he attended Muskingum College at New Concord, Ohio. He then enlisted with the United States Army during World War II.He retired from Yaeger Typesetting at Columbus after 32 years of service. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Joan, moved to Dunedin, Florida where he became a cabinet maker.Harold, who was Lutheran by faith, was an active member of the Pine Ridge community in which he lived. He was extremely proud of his granddaughters and enjoyed attending their various events.He is survived by his loving wife, Joan (Klein) Black, whom he married on October 20, 1946; two daughters, Susan Michelle Helbling and her husband, Joe of Dover, Ohio and Valerie Lynn Gillespie and her husband, Mike of Franklin, Tennessee; two granddaughters, Ali Moore and Abby Helbling both of Dover, Ohio and two sisters, Mary Brown of Clearwater, Florida and Elaine Black of Columbus, Ohio.Harold was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Conrad.In keeping with Harold’s wishes, there will be no public calling hours or services. Cremation will take place through the care of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover and a private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and view an online memorial by visiting the funeral home website.Contributions may be made in Harold’s memory to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
