Harold Arthur Boland, age 89, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully in his home early Tuesday morning, October 2, 2007, with his family at his side. Born at Cambridge, Ohio August 25, 1918, he was a son of the late Maurice William Joseph Boland and his wife, the former Helen V. Pettit. Harold graduated high school from Cambridge and attended the Cleveland Institute of Technology where he studied drafting. Harold served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, and participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France. While in the Army stationed at London, England, he met and fell in love with Jean Mary Ivory. The couple wed September 30, 1945, and Jean crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary to be together with Harold. The couple settled at New Philadelphia when Harold joined the former Joy Manufacturing Company. His career at Joy went on to span more than thirty years as a draftsman. Harold was a life member of the B.P.O. Elks #510 at New Philadelphia, the Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church, the Tuscarawas County Senior Citizens, and formerly the Tuscarawas V.F.W. Throughout his life Harold enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during camping trips to Atwood Lake, and scenic car trips into the countryside to enjoy nature at its best. This past Sunday, Harold and his wife Jean observed their sixty-second wedding anniversary. Their union has produced a family that includes three sons, Maurice (wife Jennifer) Boland of Westerville, Ohio, John Boland of Chelsea, Quebec, Canada, and William (wife Lori) Boland of Dover. Four grandchildren, Benjamin Boland of New York, New York, Emily (husband Eric) Schirtzinger of Columbus, Ohio, Lisa (husband Eric) Kovach of Stow, Ohio, and Rhiannon (husband Landon) Wallick of Dover, as well as two great-grandchildren Taylor Jo Schirtzinger and Ryan Kovach complete the family. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Pyle. Friends are invited to call Friday, from 2-4 and from 6-7PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Sue Koenig will lead a funeral service for Mr. Boland Friday evening at 7PM in the funeral home’s chapel. B.P.O. Elks services will precede the service at 6:50. A reception will follow the funeral in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service, with a private family inurnment at a later date.
