H. Paul Quicksall, age 78, of Dover and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed away Wednesday, February 29, following a two-week illness.
Born at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 26, 1933, he was a son of the late William Ellis and Mabel Nickerson Thomas Quicksall.
Paul was a 1951 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. He attended Ohio University for a semester before completing his education with The Ohio State University. Upon graduation from OSU Paul became a Professional Engineer in the states of Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
In February 1959, Paul, together with his father William E. Quicksall Sr. and his brother William E. Quicksall Jr., founded W.E. Quicksall & Associates Inc., a consulting civil engineering firm. He retired in 1989, but remained active in professional associations, including the Ohio Association of Consulting Engineers for which he had served as President and Ohio’s representative to the American Council of Engineering Companies. Paul remained a consulting engineer with his son-in-law, Harry D. Matter, at Civil Design Associates Inc.
Over the years Paul maintained an active role in community affairs. He was a member and past President of the Dover Board of Education, and was instrumental in the formation of a joint vocational school district for what is now Buckeye Career Center. Paul was a member of the Tuscarawas Valley Society of Professional Engineers, the Ohio State University Presidents Club, and the local county alumni association, the former Dover Elks Lodge of which he is a past trustee, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Tuscarawas Lodge #59, F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and the Tadmore Temple of Shiners at Akron.
From an early age, Paul has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Philadelphia, serving on various church organizations. Paul was a past member of the Dover Planning Commission for several years, the Union Country Club, and was the club’s president during design and construction of the existing club facilities, past-president of the Leesville Glens Association, and past president of the Continental Condominium Association. At the time of his death, Paul was the longest tenured member of the Tuscora Lodge #72 of the Fraternal Order of Police Associates.
In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his friends from the Leesville Glens, where he, his wife Clara and family, enjoyed summers and special occasions for forty-seven years. Paul enjoyed attending The Ohio State Football games and followed them to the Rose Bowl on several occasions as well as attending Ohio High School Athletics Association State Basketball tournaments with good friends and family.
Since his retirement, Paul spent time at Fort Lauderdale, where he enjoyed the friendships of many in the Continental Condominium. He was the last of the original owners from its organization in the late 1960’s.
On June 28, 1953, Paul married the former Clara Recilla Renner. They enjoyed forty-nine years of marriage prior to her death June 5, 2002.
His family includes three daughters; Constance (Bob) Flanagan of Dover, Patricia (Harry) Matter of New Philadelphia, and Cathleen (Steve) Akins of Warsaw, and a son; Philip H. Quicksall of Dover.
He will be greatly missed by five grandchildren; Brian (Anne) Hanner of Dover, Stephanie Hanner of Delaware, Ohio, Dr. Paul (Dr. Nadia) Matter of Columbus, Kristen Matter of New York City, and Ashley Akins of Warsaw.
Two great-grandchildren, Jacob Ellis and Caroline Clair Hanner of Dover, three step granddaughters, Laurie Flanagan, Lori Greathouse and Amy Hardway and their children, as well as a sister-in-law, Marge Quicksall of New Philadelphia who completes the family.
In addition to his wife and parents, Paul is preceded in death by his brothers; William E. Quicksall Jr. and an infant brother Kenneth Quicksall.
All are invited to call Sunday afternoon from 1-4 in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where a Masonic Lodge of Sorrow Service will convene at 4PM.
The Rev. Dr. Steve Bailey will lead Paul’s funeral Monday morning at 11 in the Geib Funeral Center before he is laid to rest alongside his wife in Dover Burial Park.
Following the committal service, family and friends will gather for a reception in the Geib Funeral Center.
