Grover Earl Ellwood Jr., age 79, of New Philadelphia died peacefully Tuesday morning, November 22, 2005 in his residence. Born June 1, 1926, at New Philadelphia, Grover was a son of the late Grover Earl and Bertha Kuhn Ellwood Sr. A graduate of New Philadelphia High School in 1944, Grover immediately began a career with Marlite that would span forty years. A year later, on August 4, 1945, Grover married the former Marjorie Snyder. The two would rear a family and make their home in the area for the next fifty-nine years. Marjorie preceded Grover in death on February 4 of this year. Grover will be remembered by his family as a gentle man, an excellent listener, a dedicated father and husband, and as a man who took pride in providing for his family. Even after his retirement in 1984, Grover spent plenty of quality time busy working to improve the homes of his daughters. He never tired of those projects or of making life better for his family. A past member of the New Philadelphia VFW post 1445, the BPOE #510, and the former New Philadelphia Loyal Order of the Moose, Grover enjoyed golfing, pitching horseshoes, but most of all, working on family projects. His family includes his four daughters, Elizabeth Weinhardt of New Philadelphia, Linda (Roger) Swiney of Sherrodsville, Carol Stutzman and Susan (Mike) Patrick both of New Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren Lauri Budimlic, Jodi Forshey, Daniel Weinhardt, Wendi Preston, Douglas Swiney, Steven Swiney, Jennifer Swiney, Gwendolyn Stutzman, Amy Stutzman, Derek Swaldo, Crystal Patrick and Cierra Patrick; 14 great-grandchildren Jason, Alivia, Alexis, Savanna, Alaina, Chelsea, Ashley, Alison, Jessica, Austin, Brandon, Megan, Thomas and Zachary; two sisters, Esther (Dean) Fickes and Helen Wolf, all of Florida, and a sister-in-law, Vera Ellwood of Dover. In addition to his wife and parents, Grover is preceded in death by a brother, John Ellwood; two sisters, Virginia Seabrook and Anna Lou Metzger; three brothers-in-law, Bill Seabrook, John Metzger and Dwight Wolf, and two infant siblings, a baby boy in 1910, and a sister, Dilla Ellwood, in 1915. Friends are invited to call Friday afternoon, November 25, from 4 until 7 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Jimmy McDonald will lead Mr. Ellwood’s funeral ceremony Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow at Dover Burial Park. At the conclusion of the committal service, family and friends will gather at the Dover Geib Funeral Center, immediately adjacent to the cemetery. In gratitude for their exemplary care, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
