Grace Scopel

Grace Elizabeth Scopel, 91, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, March 28, 2017, In Amberwood Manor while in the care of Community Hospice.

Born at Gnadenhutten on January 7, 1926, Grace was a daughter of the late Warren Heck and Olive Frazier Moran.

Grace married John D. Scopel, Sr. on January 15, 1944. Together the couple had nine children and shared in 18 years of marriage prior to John’s passing on November 2, 1962.

For a number of years, Grace was a dishwasher at the former Delphian Motor Inn at New Philadelphia. She enjoyed caring for her animals on her mini farm, spending time with her friends and keeping her family in supply of her homemade bread.

She is survived by her children, John D. Scopel, Jr. of New Philadelphia, Felix (Sue) Scopel of Wainwright, Carolyn Scopel of New Philadelphia, Josephine (Dean) Harding of New Philadelphia, Victoria Bailey of Uhrichsville, Teresa Dunivent of Wainwright, Betty (Rex) Arnold of Sugarcreek, and Tim (Kathy) Scopel of Stonecreek; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Completing the family is a sister-in-law, Catherine Heck of Dover, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Grace was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters; a daughter, Mary McNutt and a son-in-law, Donald Bailey.

The family will greet guests on Friday, March 31, 2017, from 10-11 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Trevor Littleton will lead a service celebrating Grace’s life in the funeral home’s chapel beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Gnadenhutten Clay Union Cemetery.
