Grace Viola Ott, age 95, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2024, at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover.
A daughter of the late John and Nettie Helena (Koch) Kappeler, Grace was born at the family home in New Philadelphia, OH on January 26, 1929. Grace attended New Philadelphia High School finishing 10th grade and part of 11th & 12th grades at which time she started work cleaning homes, baby sitting and working at Crescio’s, a local confectionery.
In January of 1951, a young gentleman named Owen Ott created a special place in Grace’s heart. Following a six-month courtship the couple married in June of the same year at the 3rd Street Mission in Columbus, OH by Reverend Fylena Beard, a family friend creating a union that would last nearly fifty-nine years until Owen’s passing in 2010. Together, they would rear three sons.
Grace attended the Church of God on Tuscarawas Ave. in New Philadelphia from childhood until shortly after marrying Owen. After a brief time attending the Gospel Mission, where Owen’s father pastored, Grace and Owen joined the First Church of the Nazarene in New Philadelphia. Grace was devoted to her Lord and church. For nineteen years, Grace and Owen would serve as custodians for the church. Grace also served on the Missions Council for several years and was active in the Women’s Ministry.
Grace enjoyed crocheting in her free time. She crocheted hundreds of doilies over the years for family and friends as well as adding edging on pillow slips and dresser scarves for charity fundraisers for her church.
Grace is survived by her three sons, Keith (Rose Ann) Ott of Sandusky, Jeffrey Ott of New Philadelphia, and Greg (Carol) Ott of Sykesville, Maryland; and seven grandchildren, Kelly (Pat) Dewey, Nathan (Emily) Ott, Aaron Ott, Anneliese (Cody Haines) Ott, Ryan Ott, Viktoria (Joshua) Magone and Michael Ott. Four great grandchildren, Kathryn and Caroline Ott, and Ethan and Linnea Dewey complete the family.
In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her husband Owen and her two brothers Albert and Roy Kappeler.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 10 AM in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia with Pastor Scott Jones Officiating. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia has been entrusted with the service arrangements.
It was Grace’s nature to help others. The family has requested that those wishing to make charitable contributions in her name do so by contributing to her church home, the New Philadelphia Nazarene Church, 233 Fair Ave NE, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
