Gloria A. Harriff, 85, of Dover, died October 20, 2016 at Park Village Healthcare Center.
Born on June 22, 1931, in New Philadelphia, she was the only child of James and Theresa (Abel) James.
Gloria graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1949 and then worked as an operator for the General Telephone Company.
On November 18, 1950, she wed Robert E. Harriff of Dover in Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia, and they enjoyed 45 ½ years of marriage.
Her early adult career included six years as Dover Avenue Elementary secretary and four years as realtor for Moon Realty. She later was employed by the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and in 1985, succeeded Mildred Painter as Executive Director of United Health Foundation. Following a merger with United Way, she acted as director for First Call for Help until her retirement in 1996. During her tenure at UHF, she served on numerous social service boards and steering committees. After retiring, she volunteered for the Senior Center, AARP Health Advocacy, Union Hospital Lifeline, the Arthritis Foundation, the AARP Income Tax Assistance Program and the Ohio State Healthy Insurance Council. She was the recipient of the 1997 Vic Marsh Annual Volunteer Service Award.
In her leisure time, she liked bowling, playing in several bridge clubs, and lunching with classmates. A longtime member of St. Joseph’s Church, she was a greeter at mass and an active member of both the Senior Citizens’ Group and LCBA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1996 and her son-in-law Gerald D. Quillen in 2009. She is survived by two children: daughter, Susan J. Quillen, and son, Robert J. (Sherry) Harriff, all of Dover; and, four grandchildren: Joshua R. (Stephanie) Quillen, Zachary J. Quillen, Benjamin T. Harriff and Brian R. (Amber) Harriff.
Father Jimmy Hatfield will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with visitation in the church one hour prior to mass. After entombment in Dover Burial Park, there will be a light meal in the Hospitality Center at Dover Geib Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the United Way, or Community Hospice.
