Glenna “Jean” Carlson

July 17, 1934 — June 13, 2018

Glenna “Jean” Carlson, age 83, of New Philadelphia died Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover following a period of declining health.

Born on July 17, 1934, Jean was a daughter of the late Glen and Mary “Mina” Fellers Taylor. She was a 1952 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and married the love of her life, William Carlson on October 18, 1952. Together the couple raised five children and shared a lifetime of love and togetherness.

Jean’s love for her family was immeasurable. Their hearts are broken at her loss but she will fondly and forever be remembered as the pink lipstick, pearl earring wearing lady who was an amazing baker and cook. She was well known for her famous raspberry pies, with fresh raspberries picked from her husband’s garden. Yet, others may remember her as a seafood demonstration cook at Dover Buehler’s where she worked for nearly a decade.

A coffee addict at heart, Jean loved working hard in her kitchen baking and cooking for family and friends alike. Through the years she collected hundreds of cookbooks. At one time, she wrote letters to governor’s wives asking for various family recipes and greatly enjoyed the responses she received. Jean once stated, “Reading a good recipe book is as much pleasure to me as reading a novel.”

A longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia, Jean was active in church activities and for many years, she and her husband, Bill, served as the church custodians. Jean and Bill’s weekends were spent together attending cars shows and cruise-ins as they showed Bill’s classic Chevrolets.

Jean’s unconditional love will be deeply missed by her family, a son, William (Jan) Carlson; four daughters, Barbara (Vic) Whiting, Joan (Chuck) Stull, Karen (Doug) Urfer and Linda (Steve) Higley; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; her brothers, Earl (Doris) Taylor and Robert (Emma) Taylor; her sisters, Nancy Dallas, Barb Black, and Roberta Billetter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill who died on July 31, 2015; a grandson, Charles Stull, III; a brother, James Taylor, and a brother-in-law, Ivan Dallas.

The family will greet guests on Monday, June 18, 2018 from 10-11 AM in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia where Pastor Scott Nellis will lead a celebration of Jean’s life at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the service, all are invited to share in a reception in the church social hall.

Memorial contributions in Jean’s name may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.

As Jean always said: “Don’t say goodbye. Say: “So long, until we meet again.”
