Glen E. Miller, 100, of Strasburg, died peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House in New Philadelphia.
Born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, on January 15, 1918, Glen was the son of the late Ethel Miller and Ralph Miller. He was also preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Miller after 54 years of marriage, four brothers Louis, Arthur, Kenneth, and Fred Miller, his step-daughter Nancy Ferenbaugh and grandson Daniel Ferenbaugh.
Glen was passionate about all makes of cars (classic and new), history, travel, current events and good food, especially pie. He served proudly in the U.S. Army where he was promoted to technical sergeant. He landed on D-Day at Lingayen Gulf, where he participated in the drive that liberated Manila as a member of the 140th Field Artillery Battalion of the famed 37th Division. He served on Guadalcanal, before moving into action for the Bougainville campaign of the Solomon Islands. He was awarded Battle Stars for both the Solomon and the Philippine campaigns. He retired from the Mount Vernon Material Division of Cooper Bessemer in 1981 and then moved to Largo, Florida, later returning to Dover, Ohio in 1999 to be closer to family. He spent countless hours talking to his grandchildren and all who were interested about the war along with the many changes he had witnessed throughout his 100 years of life.
Glen will forever be remembered for his ability to tell stories and his sweet spirit. He was adored by all who met him. He enjoyed life and his time with family. He leaves behind his daughter Lark (Steven) James of St. Augustine, FL, and daughter Kathy (Michael) Sleutz of Strasburg, grandchildren Kate (Timothy) Hughes of Winston-Salem, NC, Justin (Jamie) Sleutz of Colerain, OH, Brandy (Sean) Daswani of Marietta, GA, and Anthony (Courtney) James of Atlanta, GA, and Greg Ferenbaugh of Danville, OH, along with six great- grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
The family will greet guests on Friday, May 11, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in the Dover Alliance Church, 228 E. 3rd St., Dover, Ohio where Pastor Rick Rose will lead a celebration of Glen’s life at 11:00 AM. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for food and fellowship at Rosalie’s, Glen’s favorite restaurant! A private graveside inurnment will take place at Dover Burial Park at a later date.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
