Gerald L. Edie, age 93, of New Philadelphia died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, in Amberwood Manor following a period of declining health.A son of the late Charles C. and Maude (Dutton) Edie, Gerald was born at New Philadelphia on September 23, 1915.During World War II, Gerald served his country through a tour of duty with the United States Navy. During his enlistment, he served as a navigator aboard PBY Water Rescue Planes.Following his discharge from the service, Gerald would return home to the love of his life, Thelma (Newton) Edie. Together the couple would rear three children and share in sixty-eight years of marriage prior to Thelma’s passing on February 27, 2007.For more than twenty years, Gerald worked for Joy Manufacturing of New Philadelphia, where he would serve the company as a Maintenance Associate. He also previously held positions with the former New Philadelphia Brewery and the former Penn-Mold of Dover.He was a long time member of the Church of Jesus Christ Dover Restoration Branch and was also a life member of the former New Philadelphia Eagles.Gerald will be missed by his family which includes two children, Diane (Steve) Hamm of Akron, Ohio, Richard Edie of New Philadelphia; and a daughter-in-law, Myrna Edie of Greenfield, Indiana.Four grandchildren, Shawn Edie and his fiancée, Lisa Stachnik, DeeDee (Jerry) Fetters, Kristy Hodkinson, and Shannon (Steve) Tatom; as well as three great-grandchildren, Chloe Tatom, Charisa Joy Fetters, and Collin Edie complete the family.In addition to his parents and wife, Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Edie; one sister and one brother.The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Friday, August 28, 2009 from 9:30 AM Â? 10:30 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Elder’s Bruce and Tim Levengood will lead services celebrating Gerald’s life in the funeral home’s chapel at 10:30 AM on Friday. Burial with military honors will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
