Gerald D. Hootman, Sr., 77, of New Philadelphia passed away in New Dawn Healthcare Center, on May 3, 2017 following a period of declining health.
Born in New Philadelphia on May 3, 1940, Gary was the son of the late John F. and Beatrice (Ickes) Hootman.
After completing his formal education at New Philadelphia, Gary served his country in the United States Army prior to joining the New Philadelphia Police Department. After 25 years of service to the city, Gary retired as a Captain of the department. He spent many years of his retirement serving as the bailiff at the New Philadelphia Municipal Court.
On March 19, 1966, Gary married the former Bonnie S. Devore and together they were members of the Faith Christian Church and the Fraternal Order of the Police Lodge #4.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Bonnie of New Philadelphia; his sons, Gary (Shari) Hootman, Jr., and Larry (Amy) Hootman of New Philadelphia; in addition to his grandchildren, Sara and Zach Hootman and Jacob and Emily Hootman.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; and his brother, John F. Hootman, Jr.
Memorial visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. A service celebrating Gary’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 10:30 am with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Military honors will be rendered at the funeral home following the service. Cremation will be cared for through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.
