George William Wilson, age 83, of Midvale, died Thursday, March 10, 2016 while in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.
A son of the late George W. and Myrtle Haver Wilson, George was born at Midvale on May 30, 1932.
He was a 1950 graduate of the former Midvale High School and soon after graduating began working for the former Midvale Mine. He entered into the United States Army and served in Korea until his discharge. For 36 years, George worked in construction as a Union Laborer and retired from Gundy Construction in 1993.
George was a life member of the VFW and served for 19 years as the Post Commander of the former Midvale VFW. For two decades he served his community as the Village Marshall and coached numerous youth with the Midvale Pony and Babe Ruth baseball leagues. For 14 years, he served as the President of the Midvale and Indian Valley North Athletic Boosters. George was an avid bowler and fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Most recently he was recognized for his 55 years of membership with the LIUNA #134 Union. Above all, he enjoyed family cookouts and traveling to casinos.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, the former Helen Burdette whom he married on March 24, 1955; their children, Georgianne (Greg) Turner of New Philadelphia and Ron (Cathy) Wilson of Midvale; two granddaughters, Kadi (fiancé, Alex Incarnato) Wilson of Columbus, and Kelssi Wilson of Dover; his sisters, Vera Wilson and Woneta Quillen both of Midvale, his good friend, Terry Everett and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother, Donald “Cutty” Waltz; and three sisters, Betty Creager, Margaret Colletti, and Mary King.
The family will greet guests on Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 2-5 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating George’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 10:30 AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park. A meal and fellowship will follow the service in the Midvale Park Pavillion.
