George W. Gross, 85, of Uhrichsville, died Thursday, January 5, 2005 at Country Club Retirement Center in Dover.A son of the late John and Flora Tschantz Gross, George was born February 22, 1920 in Wainwright, O.He was a 1938 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, and worked for the former Joy Manufacturing in New Philadelphia.George was a WWII Army Air Corp. veteran having served as a captain with the Eighth Airforce. He flew 31 combat missions, the last on D-Day, and was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.He belonged to the Dover Elks, and the former New Philadelphia Moose. He enjoyed bowling, golf and flying his ultra light aircraft.He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Mike Henry, of New Philadelphia; son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Diana Gross, of Woodstown, NJ; grandchildren, Meredith Gross, Jennifer Broyles, Todd and Matt Neaveill and Megan and Matt Henry; five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances E. Donohoe Gross, four brothers and three sisters.In accordance with his wishes there will be no visitation and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia has been entrusted with the arrangements.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
