George G. Lorenz, 91, peacefully died Tuesday evening, July 15, 2003 at Park Village in Dover. George was born on the south side of New Philadelphia January 10, 1912 to the late Charles and Ethel Coutts Lorenz. In 1929 he graduated from New Philadelphia High School and shortly thereafter he started working for Ladel Manufacturing as a laborer. He quickly progressed from laborer to head fabricator, then chief inspector and then worked in the engineering department as a draftsman. In February 1941 George married the former Mary Otto. George was a charter member of the Yellow Jacket Motorcycle Club. Both he and Mary enjoyed motorcycling. Mary died November 6, 1961. During the second world war, George became general foreman of the Ladel plant. After the war, Joy Manufacturing purchased the facility. In 1949 George became a superintendent and later he rejoined the engineering department working with experimental and development projects. On February 17, 1968, George married Lucille Beitzel Edie, who survives. George and Lucille’s families had been friends most of their lives. Prior to retirement, George worked with Joy’s tool and die design department as its supervisor. He helped organize and was a charter member and first president of the Joy Management Club. He also helped organize the Joy Recreational Association.In 1977 George retired at 65. He and Lucille spent many happy years on the golf course. Along with Lucille, George was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church.In addition to Lucille, George is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Lorenz (Rex) Tracht of Greensboro, NC; step-sons, Frederick C. (Bonnie) Edie, Ph. D. of Gainesville, FL and Danny D. (Marge) Edie, Ph. D. of Clemson, SC; step-daughter, Susan Edie (Steve) Garwood of Asheville, NC; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, George was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Lorenz Troha, his son, Frederick N. Lorenz, and his grandson, David Tracht.Visitation will be Friday, July 18, 2003 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The funeral will be Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 10:30 AM at Broadway United Methodist Church with Rev. William A. Sowers and Rev. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at East Avenue Cemetery.
