George Christner, age 83, of New Philadelphia died Saturday, February 18, 2006 in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness. A son of the late Abner and Charlotte Brenneman Christner, George was born December 6, 1922 at Iowa City, Iowa.George had a great appreciation of the outdoors and marveled at its beauty. Raised on a farm, George learned early on from his father the carpentry trade. For decades he worked as a finish carpenter before he became affiliated with Schaeffer Trucking where he worked as an over the road driver. Most importantly, George was a man of remarkable character. His trademark gentle demeanor served him well as a father, grandfather, friend and companion. George will be missed by his friends in area civic and social clubs.George is survived by two daughters, Darlene and husband Lyman “Bud” Wade of Sugarcreek, and Dorothy Christner and her companion, Bob Miller, of Sugarcreek, four sons; David and wife Carol Christner of Berlin, Paul and wife Jen Christner of Walnut Creek, Morris and wife Sally Christner of Millersburg, Daryl and wife MaryBeth Christner of Wilmot, one brother; Joseph and wife Millie Christner of Iowa City, Iowa, one sister; Ester Fuller of California, five granddaughters; Heather Goings, Nichole Hamshire, Adrianne Bryk, Miranda Christner, and Kasandra Christner, three grandsons; Marcus Miller, Andrew Christner, and Brandon Christner, five great grandchildren; Jasmine, Sasha, Daisy, Madisyn and Lily, and two great-grandsons; Ethan and Jaydon. George will be sadly missed by his longtime friend Margaret “Peg” Wolfe of New Philadelphia, and her sons, Denny and Dale Wolfe, and the extended Wolfe family.In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother Alvin Christner.Visitation will be Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at 116 Second Street NE, New Philadelphia. Pastor Max Canfield will lead George’s funeral service Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a reception will be given in the fellowship hall of the First Church of the Brethren, 700 Fair Avenue NW, New Philadelphia.
