Genevieve Shambarger, 94, passed away peacefully in Lincoln, Neb., on April 9, 2014. A resident of New Philadelphia, Ohio since 1948, Genevieve moved to Lincoln, Neb. in Sept., 2013 to live with her eldest son, Charles. The third youngest of 11 children, she was born on May 12, 1919, to Paul and Mary (Judy) Siebert in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where she grew up.
Genevieve married Fred W. Shambarger in South Euclid, Ohio on June 29, 1944. The couple moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio in 1948, where Fred worked for 42 years as a sales representative for the George Worthington Company (Cleveland) before retiring. Genevieve worked for AAA Travel from 1964-1972 and then at The Diamond Shop in New Philadelphia for 34 years. Genevieve and Fred moved fulltime to their Atwood Lake home in 1978. Fred died in 1996, and after several years, she moved back to New Philadelphia. Genevieve was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia for 66 years. She and Fred were also longtime members of the Atwood Yacht Club. In 2004, she organized the “Red Hat Phillies” Chapter of the Red Hat Society in New Phila. Over the years, Genevieve was active in the CCL, Twig 2 of Union Hospital and Auxilliary Group of Chestnut Society (Kent State support group). She enjoyed her family, entertaining, traveling, needlework, crafts, reading, music events and volunteering.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and four sisters, her husband of 52 years, and daughter-in-law, Maurine (Henninger) Shambarger (wife of Charles).
She is survived by her three sons: Charles of Lincoln, Neb., Paul and his wife Liz (Pennock) of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Peter and his wife Elizabeth (McPherson) of Annapolis, Md.; seven grandchildren: Amy, Michael, Erick, Katrina, Andrew, Genevieve, and Lydia; and five great-grandchildren: Vlad, Braden, Dahlia, Jackson and Julie; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Genevieve will be held on Monday, June 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia with Rev. Dr. Steven Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Following the service, a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall at the church. Private family inurnment will be held in New Cumberland Cemetery.
