Frederick “Rick” Howell, age 64, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, August 10, 2015 while in the care of Community Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer.
A son of the late Frederick W. and Margaret “Margie” Newburn Howell, Rick was born at Steubenville, Ohio on September 15, 1950.
Following graduation from Carrollton High School, Rick became a proud member of the United States Marine Corps having completed his initial training at Paris Island. He was given his first set of orders in November of 1968 where he was stationed in Southeast Asia. He was a member of the Fox Company 2nd Battalion 26th Marines 1st Marine Division Fleet that ranged from North Da Nang to the DMZ. Rick rose to the Rank of Marine Sgt. E-5 and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in battle.
Following his separation from the Military, Rick went on to receive a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Arizona. He served as a law enforcement officer for five years in Yuma, Arizona and returned to Carrolton, Ohio where he served for an additional year. After leaving law enforcement, Rick went to work as a truck driver and drove for various companies for 27 years prior to his retirement.
Rick attended Goshen Community Church of the Nazarene and was a life-time member of the VFW. He enjoyed motorcycles; but above all, he had a deep passion for his family, his grandchildren, and helping anyone in need.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 22 years, the former Kathy “Kate” Sue Craig, whom he married on January 9, 1993; his sons, Kyle Howell of Steubenville, Ronnie (Stacy) Howell of Dunnellon, Florida, and Jim Howell of Canton and three grandchildren, Makenzie Howell, Tanner Howell, and Ryleigh Howell.
Completing the family are his siblings, Chuck (Donna) Howell, Harold (Dona) Howell, Dale (Michelle) Howell, Darrell (Christine) Howell; a sister-in-law, Linda Howell all of Carrolton and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by two brothers, Galin Howell and Mark Howell and a sister, Carol Jean Howell.
In keeping with Rick’s wishes there will be no public visitation or services. Cremation care will be conducted by Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory at Dover.
At the family’s request please perform a random act of kindness for others and ask them to pay it forward, just as Rick did. Those wishing to make contributions in his memory may do so by directing gifts to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
