Frederick P. Frey Jr. age 80, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully early Saturday evening, March 14, 2009, following a brief illness.Born March 6, 1929, at Zoarville, Fred was a son of the late Frederick P. Frey Sr. and Nellie May Knotts Frey.During the Korean Conflict, Fred served his country in the United States Army and since, has been a long-standing member of the American Legion Post # 139 at New Philadelphia.For more than 37 years, Mr. Frey was employed as a grinder specialist for the Timken Company at New Philadelphia. In addition to his membership with the American Legion, Fred was a long standing member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia.One of Fred’s many passions was taking great care of his lawn. Many passers-by will recall him toiling, grooming and tending to the lush green space that surrounded his home. Hunting and fishing were also interests as was spending time with his son-in-law, Dave, assisting him in the operation of Dave’s combine business, traveling from farm to farm and harvesting various crops for farmers.For the past 13 years, following the passing of Fred’s brother, Russell Frey, Fred and his wife, Ruth, spent an evening each week with his sister-in-law, Rosa Frey, enjoying fellowship and collaborating on the assembly of jigsaw puzzles.Most of all, Fred enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, his companion of more than 58 years, the former Ruth E. Klingaman, who survives. The couple wed August 22, 1950, and together reared a family that includes daughters; Kathlene Born of Arizona, Karen (husband, Dave) Strous of Amanda, Ohio, and Patricia (husband, Tim) Krzyzanowski of Perrysburg, Ohio, and a son; Frederick P. (wife, Debbie) Frey, III of Mineral City.He’ll be sadly missed by ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters; Thelma Piatt, of California, and Mary Altier, of Canton, a brother; Robert (wife, Margaret) Frey of Strasburg. A sister-in-law, Rosa Frey, of Dover, close friends Jim and Penny McKain of New Philadelphia, and numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.In addition to his parents, Fred is preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Frey and Glenn Frey; a sister, Wilma Stoner, and a granddaughter, Marsha Adams.The family will receive guests Tuesday afternoon, from 4-7 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Fred’s life will be led by pastors Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett Wednesday morning at 10 in the First United Church of Christ, 201 Fair Avenue NW, New Philadelphia. Burial with military honors will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. A reception will be held in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home, following interment.The Frey family is grateful for the service and care given to them especially by the nurses and staff on 4 south and 6 south floors of Aultman Hospital.
