Fred William Johns, 67, of Tuscarawas, died Thursday morning, April 10, 2008 in his home.A son of the late Frederick and Mary (Hinds) Johns, Fred was born July 31, 1940 at New Philadelphia, Ohio.On March 5, 1961, Fred married the love of his life, the former Carolyn Steffe in St. John’s United Church of Christ at Dover. Together the couple raised two children, Ken and Mike.Fred worked for Canton Drop Forge until his retirement in August of 2003. He was a member of the F. & A.M. Lodge #763 of Crete, Illinois.Fred’s true joy in life was golf. He enjoyed playing at Five Waters Golf Course at Midvale where he participated in the senior league. One of his most precious memories took place on July 23, 2000 when he recorded his first of two hole-in-one’s.He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carolyn Johns of the home; his two sons, Ken (Linda) Johns of Massillon, Ohio and Mike Johns of Tuscarawas; three grandchildren, Danielle Johns of Bolivar and Amber and Jesse Johns of Brighton, Missouri; three step grandchildren, Bruce (Lisa) Gallagher, Sandy Gallagher and Bonnie (Joe) Pape all of Massillon, Ohio; one great granddaughter, Cameron Cantwell; one brother, Robert Johns of Orville and an aunt C. Hope Porter of New Philadelphia.Fred was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Johns.The family will receive guests on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with the New Philadelphia Masonic Lodge conducting Masonic Services at 2:45 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Fred’s life will be held on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel with Pastor Michael Lowry officiating. Following the service, a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
