Dr. Fred W. “Wheaties” Andrews, Jr., 89, a lifelong resident of New Philadelphia, died peacefully Thursday evening, April 1, 2010 in New Dawn Retirement Community at Dover.Born June 6, 1920 in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Fred W. and Elma Grove Andrews. After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in1938, he continued his formal education at Heidelberg College. Prior to his senior year, Wheaties was drafted into the United States Army. He honorably served his country in the 78th (Lightening) Infantry Division in Europe during World War II where he led a combat rifle squad in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle at Remagen Bridge. Upon his discharge in 1946 at the rank of Battalion Sergeant Major, he then completed his formal education at Lincoln Chiropractic College in Noblesville, Indiana. Wheaties and his late wife, the former Jean Wright, were married on May 31, 1947 in the First Evangelical & Reformed Church at New Philadelphia, now First United Church of Christ. They returned from Noblesville to their beloved New Philadelphia where he began his private chiropractic practice retiring in 2005 after more than 55 years in the profession. Jean preceded him in death one year ago on April 2, 2009. Wheaties generously gave of his time providing chiropractic care for many generations of New Philadelphia area families and high school athletes. He also had developed a friendship and athletic association with area legend Woody Hayes which continued throughout their lives until Hayes’ death. During that time, Wheaties periodically provided care to players on the OSU football team.Wheaties gave much of his time to area organizations including Union Country Club, the Elks Lodge, and the Rotary Club, where he served as president. Additional organizations where he served as a board member included the New Philadelphia School board, the former Easter Seals, now the Rainbow Connection and the Crippled Children’s Foundation. He also enjoyed his affiliation with the United States Trotting Association. Wheaties was honored as the Grand Marshals of the First Town Days festival in 2003.He was an avid golfer, enjoying the sport well into his 80s at Union Country Club.He is survived by his children and their spouses, Rebecca and Bill Welfley of Dover, Bruce and Maureen Andrews of Columbus, Ohio and William and Cathy Andrews of Dublin, Ohio; six grandchildren, Rachel Welfley of Dover, Benjamin (Celine) Welfley of New Philadelphia and Matthew Welfley of Dover and Daniel (Katera) Welfley of Canton, Stephen (Melissa) Andrews of Dublin, Ohio and Brian (Lindsay) Andrews of Jerome, Ohio; and four great grandchildren, Madelyn, Elizabeth, Jack and Olivia Andrews.Visitation will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.
