Fred Richter, age 93, of Massillon, died Sunday, August 21, 2022, while in the care of Grace Hospice following a period of declining health.
Born at New Philadelphia on April 21, 1929, Fred was a son of the late Carl M. and Meta (Schrader) Richter.
He was a 1947 graduate of New Philadelphia High school and completed his formal education at Kent State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree. For many years Fred was a teacher and coach at Massillon Washington High School. Before going into teaching Fred honorably served his country in the United Air Force. Over his 23-year career in the Air Force he served in Japan, Korea, England, Vietnam and many state side assignments. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Fred will be missed by his wife, Barbara (Hess) Richter, whom he married on February 17, 1952; his children, Vicki (Martin) Seifert of North Canton and Carl (Gale) Richter of Urbana, Maryland; his grandchildren, Matthew (Suzanne) Richter, Michelle (Dennis) Volpe, Megan (Kevin) MacCauley, Martin (Nicole) Seifert and Melissa (Keith) Mistretta; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his brothers, Gus Richter and Carl “Butch” Richter; sister, Marian Doidge; and great-granddaughter, Angelina Hope Volpe.
The family will greet guests on Saturday, August 28, 2022, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Jim Wallick will lead a service in the funeral home’s chapel at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at The Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
Fred’s family would like to thank Heritage Villa’s and Grace Hospice for their exceptional care given to Fred during his illness.
