Fred Edward McAbier, 86, of Port Washington, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 in New Dawn Retirement Community surrounded by his family.A son of the late Charles and Isabelle (Brooks) McAbier, Fred was born June 17, 1923 in Amsterdam, Ohio.Fred was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. Following graduation, he enlisted with the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.He was a longtime truck driver for C & W Transport at Akron until his retirement at the age of 65. Following retirement, Fred worked for eight years at Odd Lots Department Store.Fred was a member of the Midvale V.F.W. as well as the former New Philadelphia Eagles Lodge. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who dearly cherished his family.He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen (Lax) McAbier of the home; four children, Pamela (Bob) McCoy of New Philadelphia, Karen (Raymond) Mortimer of Fredericktown, Ohio, Raymond McAbier of New Philadelphia and Nancy (Chuck) Hunter of Port Washington; his grandchildren, Fred (Carl) McAbier, Ronnie (Corinne) McAbier, Brian (Sue) McAbier, Libby (Ray) McAbier, Jennifer McAbier, Loren (Lynn) Kalt, Mark Kalt, Tracy (Pat) Walker, Shelley (Ethan) Edwards, Kevin Cox, Derek (Abby) McAbier and Steven McAbier; 11 great grandchildren and a sister, Betty Cvengros of Louisville, Ohio.Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Fred McAbier and a brother, Clarence McAbier.The family will receive guests on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Fred’s life will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Chad Stutzman officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia where the Midvale V.F.W will render military honors. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.Contributions may be made in Fred’s memory to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
