Frank A. “Tony” Dergel, Jr., 86, of Solon and formerly of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, August 15, 2006 in Aurora Manor at Aurora, Ohio.A son of the late Frank Dergel, Sr and Helen (Wormak) Dergel, Frank was born September 27, 1919 in Alderson, Oklahoma.He was a 1938 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. Frank was a retired postal carrier having worked at the New Philadelphia Post Office and his route consisted of Tuscarawas Avenue in New Philadelphia.Frank was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the 29th Infantry Division, the Blue & Gray Division. During his service to his country, he was stationed in Panama, France, Germany and the Philippines during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.He was the oldest member of the Schoenbrunn Jass Club as well a member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445. Frank enjoyed walking, gardening and history and during his younger years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman.He is survived by two daughters, Becky (Joseph) Richards of Solon, Ohio and Sherry Phillips of Lemoore, California; grandchildren, Joseph and Kathryn Richards and Rachel Leaverton and Jodi Moriarty; great-grandchildren, Kealy, Kian and Carson Moriarty and Bridgette Leaverton; one sister, Betty Fox of Brewster; one brother, Ralph Bittler of North Canton and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marjorie E. (Schlegel) Dergel who passed away on December 23, 2004.A funeral service celebrating Frank’s life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with Father Louis Trivison officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia with the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 performing military honors. Family and friends may call in the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Following the services, a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.Memorial contributions may be made in Frank’s memory to Hospice of Western Reserve, 300 East 185th Street, Cleveland, OH 44119-1330.
