Frances W. Taylor

Longtime New Philadelphia educator Frances Taylor of Canton, and formerly New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Canton Regency.Born at Dennison, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Lena (Wilson) Ryan. A graduate of Dennison High School, Frances earned a BS in Education from The Ohio State University in 1935. She went on to teach Latin, English, and for most of her professional career, Spanish to students in the former high schools at Baltic, Tuscarawas, and Port Washington until finishing her career with 25 years as head of the Spanish Department at New Philadelphia High School. During her tenure at New Philadelphia, Mrs. Taylor took many trips with her students to Mexico, Spain and Costa Rica. She loved teaching, loved her students, and often shared many fond memories of her experiences. Mrs. Taylor retired in 1978 and relocated to Canton a short time later where she devoted time as a volunteer for the Canton Battered Women’s Shelter. There she also attended the Canton First Friends Church. Her memberships were numerous, and include a term as president of the Ohio Foreign Language Association, the Tuscarawas County Retired Teachers Association, the New Philadelphia Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Frances leaves behind a family that includes her daughter; Jackie (husband, Tim) Hisrich of Canton, and a son; Michael (wife Patty) Taylor of New Philadelphia.Six grandchildren; Seth (wife, Kristen) Taylor of Canton, O., Adam Taylor of Akron, O., Jason (wife Michelle) Hisrich of Salem, O., Matthew (wife Heidi) Hisrich of Richmond, IN., as well as Ian and Jill Fleming of New Philadelphia, also survive. Three great-grandchildren; Emma, Daniel and Anna Hisrich complete the family. In addition to her parents, Frances is preceded in death by her former husband, Arnold Taylor. Friends are invited to call Monday, August 24, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey will lead Mrs. Taylor’s funeral service Tuesday August 25 at 1 pm in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery. Following the committal service, family and friends will gather in the fellowship hall at First United Methodist Church for a luncheon. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of the Canton Regency, who not only gave Frances excellent care, they gave her their friendship as well.Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at First United Methodist Church, 201 West High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
