Floyd Elmer Lane, 88, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, May 01, 2011 in Amberwood Manor at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.A lifelong resident of the area, Floyd was born July 20, 1922 at New Philadelphia, Ohio to the late Grover C. and Susannah (Rothrock) Lane.He was a 1940 graduate of New Philadelphia School and attended Kent State University. Floyd was a World War II veteran. He served in the Third Army under the command of General George Patton in Europe and was involved in the four major campaigns.After 32 years of service, Floyd retired from Warner and Swasey, Gradall Division at New Philadelphia where he was a supervisor. He was an active member of Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. Floyd sang in the Weslyan Choir and Victors Mens Chorus. He also held a music ministry at several area nursing homes. Floyd was a member of the Schoenbrunn Valley Barbershop Chorus since 1973. He was a charter member of the Richmond Howitzers of World War II, a reunion group founded in 1967 in Richmond, Virginia. During his membership, Floyd served as Recording Secretary and Chaplain. He was a charter member of the Stark Central Section of the American Welding Society where he served as treasurer for 14 years and was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.He was a member of the New Philadelphia #177 F. & A.M., Tuscarawas Chapter #38 Royal Arch Masons, Tuscarawas Council #109, Royal and Select Masons, St. Bernard Commandry #51 Knights Templar, Shannon Council #25, Knight Masons of Ireland and Ohio Priory #18 and the Knights of the York Cross of Honor. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia #222 Order of Eastern Star,He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Annabelle Lane; his sons, David, Douglas and Gary Lane all of New Philadelphia and a brother, Robert (Ruth) Lane also of New Philadelphia.Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence Skrada and Gloria McBride and two brothers, Sterling and Grover Lane Jr.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with Masonic services being held at 7:45 p.m. A service celebrating Floyd’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Dale Fincher officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors.
