Evelyn G. Mathias, 82, of New Philadelphia, died February 16, 2007, in Riverside Manor Nursing Home at Newcomerstown, Ohio.A daughter of the late J.W. and Caroline (Welsch) Gray, Evelyn was born on April 7, 1924, in Port Washington, Ohio. In 1942, Evelyn was graduated from Port Washington High School and moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she worked at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base for two years. Evelyn retired in 1984, after 40 years of working at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse. She started in the Probate Court as a court stenographer and then worked in the Prosecutor’s office as an administrative assistant.Evelyn was a member of the St. Paul’s E and R UCC and the Midvale Lady Lions Club. For many years, Evelyn and her late husband Daniel delivered Mobile Meals. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and had a love for dogs. Her sense of humor was with her until the very end. She was a devoted godmother and always enjoyed her wonderful Brightwood neighbors.In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Jacob Mathias; brothers, Robert William Gray, Vernon F. Gray; sister, Betty Groves; goddaughter, Lisa Reneé Endlich; sister-in-law, Doris Gray; brother-in-law, Russell Groves.She is survived by her sister, Janet (Adrian) Endlich of Port Washington; goddaughter, Michelle (Eric) Golder of New Philadelphia and their son, Eric Lee, Jr. She is also survived by nephews, Larry Groves of Canton, Ohio, William (Lynnette) Groves of Louisville, Ohio, David (Sandy) Gray of New Philadelphia, John (Sonja) Gray of Cambridge, Ohio, Joe (Debbie) Gray of New Philadelphia, Thomas Gray of Newcomerstown, Randy Gray of Newcomerstown, Nathan (Bobbi) Gray of Gnadenhutten; nieces, Debi (Dave) Weber of Hilton Head, North Carolina, Tina Hughes of West Lafayette, Jennine Gray of North Carolina; great nieces and nephews, Lucas, Sam, Kyle, Lauren, Ben, Mike, Cody, Eric, Taylor, Heidi, Brittany, Emily, Amanda, Sheila, Emily, Derrick, Josie, Gabriella, Garret, Carter; great-great nephews, Conner and Reilly; sisters-in-law, Myra Taylor Gray of Newcomerstown, Marion Gray of New Philadelphia.Friends are invited to call Sunday, February 18, 2007, from 5:00-8:00 pm. in the Linn-Hert Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.The Dr. Rev. Robert Buckley will lead the Mathias funeral on Monday, February 19, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. in the Linn-Hert Geib Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park.
