Eugene R. “Genie” Lindsay, 56, passed away peacefully in his New Philadelphia home on early Sunday evening, August 3, 2003, with his family at his side. Gene was born at Union Hospital in Dover on April 29, 1947 to Mavis M. Harmon and the late Eugene E. “Judge” Lindsay, who died June 26, 2003. The family made their home in Uhrichsville, where Gene graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1965. Gene coached and later umpired for several years Uhrichsville Little League baseball games while his younger brother Randy played. Gene went to work for Reeves Steel and remained with the company through its several successors and after 33 years, he retired from AK Steel. He was a member of Steel Workers’ Union Local 2737. Through work, he played basketball for the Empire-Detroit Steel team.He married Joyce M. Welshenbaugh on September 21, 1974. They had two children, Jennifer Lindsay Kyle and Robert Lindsay, who survive. With his family, Gene was a member of the Community of Christ in New Philadelphia.The most important part of Gene’s life was always his family. At Christmas time, Gene loved to decorate his home and he made sure there were plenty of gifts for everyone.While Joyce was an officer with P. T. O., Gene helped refurbish the Tuscarawas Avenue School and assisted with raising funds for the school. He also helped his daughter’s Girl Scout Troup, #250.Gene liked playing pool and had won several trophies.Besides his wife and two children, Gene is survived by his mother, Mavis M. Lindsay of Uhrichsville; sister, Patricia (Terry) Everett of New Philadelphia; brothers, David W. Lindsay and Randall L. (Nanette) Lindsay, both of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Tiffany and Racheal Kyle of New Philadelphia; niece, Sarah Mowls of Kent; mother-in-law, Betty Welshenbaugh of Goshen; brothers-in-law, James and Kenneth Welshenbaugh of Goshen and Dennis (Rose) Welshenbaugh of Dennison.In addition to his dad, Gene was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Carl Welshenbaugh, in 1995.Visitation will be Tuesday, August 5, 2003 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia. The funeral will be in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 10:30 AM with Elder Rose Lomax officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park.
