Eugene Eli “Judge” Lindsay, 78, of Uhrichsville, died peacefully Thursday morning, June 26, 2003 in Timken Mercy Medical Center. Born November 29, 1924 in Brightwood, Eugene was the son of the late Ray Thomas Lindsay and Mary Fowler Lindsay. Following graduation from Midvale High School in 1942, Eugene enlisted in the Army, later graduating from Jump School at Fort Benning, Ga. During his service, he fought in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines, Luzon, and later Japan as a member of Battery C, 457th Parachute Artillery, part of the 11th Airborne Division. Mr. Lindsay’s division of paratroopers was the first to occupy the Japanese mainland, two days before V.J. Day in August, 1945. By the time Eugene was honorably discharged in January, 1946, he had been decorated with the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal. Less than six months after returning home, he married his sweetheart, the former Mavis Marie Harmon on July 14, 1946. Eugene was a retired heavy equipment operator having worked in both the coal and clay industries. In his spare time, and more recently in his retirement, Eugene enjoyed golfing, and making miniature furniture for children. He not only made furniture for children, he also became the famous “O. B. Joyful” by donning a clown costume and clown makeup, whenever called upon by family and friends to do so. A spirited man, Mr. Lindsay was an ordained teacher at the Community of Christ Church.Together with his wife of 56 years, Mr. Lindsay raised a daughter, Patricia (Terry) Everett of New Philadelphia; three sons, Eugene R. “Gene” (Joyce) Lindsay of New Philadelphia, David W. Lindsay and Randall L. (Nanette) Lindsay, both of Uhrichsville.He will be sadly missed by three grandchildren, Jennifer & Robert Lindsay of New Philadelphia, and Sarah Mowls of Kent; O, two great-grandchildren; Tiffany and Racheal Kyle; one sister, Norma Renicker of Warren, O, and numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat Whiskers. Friends are invited to call Saturday, June 28, from 2 until 4 & 6 until 8 at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home, New Philadelphia. Elder Bonnie Wolfe will officiate funeral services Sunday afternoon at 4:00 in the funeral home’s chapel. Following the service, the family is hosting a reception at the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home. A graveside committal service, including military honors, will take place Monday at 11am in Union Cemetery, Uhrichsville.
