Eugene Edward Chumney

Eugene Edward Chumney, age 87, of Mineral City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 14, 2015, while in the care of Park Village Health Care Center at Dover following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Reader Ray and Lena Opplinger Chumney, Gene, as he was known by family and friends was born at Dover on January 25, 1928.

He attended Dover City Schools and entered into the United States Army. Gene raced horses, enjoyed farming, and retired in 1987 from Tusky Valley Schools, where he served as Transportation Coordinator. His faith was nurtured at The Church of New Hope at Dover.

Gene is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Shirley Miller, whom he married on January 15, 1954; their children, LaVonne Debois, Kevin (Janet) Chumney, Tyronne Chumney, Lisa (Lanny) Rosenberry, Gloria (Ron) Lester, Shonda (Bob) Davis, and James (Patti) Williams.

Completing the family are his siblings, Ervin (Betty) Chumney, Walter (Charlene) Chumney, and Ray (Barbara) Chumney; 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by an infant daughter; a daughter, Darla Dee Chumney Allen; his brother and sister-in-law, Doyle and Lillian Chumney as well as a sister, Charlene Chumney.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 18, 2015 from 4-7 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover and again one hour prior to services on Saturday from 10-11 AM. Pastor Dan Legg will lead a service celebrating Gene’s life on Saturday at 11 AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. Burial will follow in the Dover Burial Park. Following services, all are invited to share in a meal and fellowship in the Hospitality Room of the Dover Geib Center.
