Ernest S. “Ernie” Carinelli, 88, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover with his loving family at his side.

Born in Dennison on April 10, 1926, he was the son of the late Dominick and Ida “Edith” (DiGuiliano) Carinelli.
After graduating from Dennison High School in 1943, Ernie honorably served his country in World War II, in the 32nd Infantry Division on the US Army in the Philippines.

On April 16, 1952, Ernie married his lifelong companion and friend, the former Jennie S. Scaffidi, who was at his side through the final moments of his life. Together, they were members of Sacred Heart Church and were blessed with two daughters, Marianne and Donna.

Ernie’s professional career with the railroad spanned numerous years, ultimately retiring with Conway in 1982.
Ernie was very active with the Knights of Columbus in Dennison as well as the Sacred Heart Seniors. He also loved to share his time with St. Mary’s and Central Catholic athletic teams where he was a coach and avid fan, too.

Additionally, Ernie spent 25 years with the Railway Transportation Department in Dennison in the Army-Reserve, and the A.I.C. and VFW in Dennison.

Ernie will be deeply missed by Jennie; his daughters, Marianne (Paul) Sarna and Donna Marie (Michael) Burtscher, both of Dover; his grandchildren, Stacie (fiancé, Chris VanTress) Dapoz, Tyler Dapoz, Brittany Marie (Tyler) Dreher, and Michael E. (Ashley) Burtscher; his great-grandchildren, Landyn Dreher and Julian Burtscher; his sister-in-law, Nancy Scaffidi of Dover.

In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his sister, Erma Gibson; sisters-in-law, Mary Jean Wert and Ann Scaffidi; and his brothers-in-law, Pete Scaffidi, Sandy Scaffidi, and Lloyd Gibson.
