Elmer D. “Elmo” Garabrandt, 85, New Philadelphia, died early Wednesday morning, May 12, 2004, at Morningview Care Center where he had been a patient for several years.One of twelve children in the family of the now late Thomas H. and Eliza J. Medley Garabrandt, Elmer was born in New Philadelphia on January 1, 1919.He was a member of the United States Navy during World War II, serving on submarines in the South Pacific for 6 ½ years. He was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Victory Medal.Elmer enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445, and was a former member of the New Philadelphia Eagles and the New Philadelphia Moose.He was retired from Miracle Adhesives in New Philadelphia.He is survived by his loving wife, the former Verna M. “Vernie” Reichman, with whom he celebrated 40 years of marriage June 30th of last year; a daughter, Sharon Jean Gouch of Dover, sisters, Lucille Granato of New Philadelphia and Mary Hess of Dover; brother, Richard (Dixie) Garabrandt of New Philadelphia; god daughter, Mary Katherine “Kathy” (George E.) Joseph of New Philadelphia; great-godchildren, Hunter Avery Joseph, Larkin Sierra Joseph, and Jente Evan Joseph.Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Alice Vladasav, Bessie Shull, and Freida Bonizolli; and five brothers, Earl, William, Delbert, Thomas, and Donald.Friends may call on the family on Friday, May 14, between 12 noon and 1:00 pm at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia. Following visitation, Pastor Dode Overton will officiate at graveside services at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover. Graveside military services will be conducted by the New Philadelphia VFW.Memorial contributions may be made to the New Life Church of God, 115 South Avenue, Dover, OH 44622.
