Elizabeth Pauline “Libby” Hahn of New Philadelphia, died peacefully following a three year illness, surrounded by her family, just hours before her 76th birthday on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 while in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.
A daughter of the late Phillip Smitley, Jr. and Thelma (Conley) Smitley, Libby was born in Union Hospital at Dover on December 12, 1937.
Growing up she was known as one of the “Smitley Girls”, sisters who have remained close their entire lives, gathering often for not only joint birthday parties and family reunions but special outings as well.
Libby was a 1956 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and on July 1, 1957, she married the love of her life, George Hahn. Together the couple reared three children and celebrated 56 years of marriage, care and devotion to one another.
Throughout her working career, Libby was employed as a cook for a number of area restaurants that included the former Bonvechio’s and Randall’s Restaurants prior to joining the staff at the Mill Restaurant located in Buehler’s Parkside at Dover. For 17 years, she cooked at the Mill before retiring and joining Head Start as a foster grandparent. She loved the children she had the opportunity to work with and had an uncanny ability to walk into a room and have children gather at her side.
In her free time, Libby enjoyed taking bus trips with her husband and making special shopping trips throughout the year often finding the perfect gift for each family member for birthdays and Christmas. Above all, Libby was passionate about making sure her family was cared for before she ever sat down, ensuring that each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren never went without.
She will be greatly missed by her family that includes her husband, three children, Scott (Patti) Hahn, Clark (fiancée, Laura) Hahn all of New Philadelphia, and Holly Johnson of Uhrichsville; four sisters, Marge Menapace, Neva Marsh, Dorothy Waller, and Shirley Richards and two brothers, Clarence (Shirley) Smitley and Dan (Robin) Smitley.
Nine grandchildren, Stephani, Joe, Ben, Clayton, Corey, Casie, Calissa, Randy, and Travis, 15 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to her parents, Libby was preceded in death by three sisters Mildred, Beatrice, and Betty and two brothers, Tom and Phillip.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating Libby’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
The family requests memorial contributions in Libby’s name be directed to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and light a candle in remembrance of Libby by visiting the funeral home’s website at www.GeibCares.com.
