Elizabeth “Betty” Coutts, 83, New Philadelphia, died Wednesday morning, June 30, 2004.The daughter of the late John and Audrey McMann Gallops, Betty was born in Alabama on July 30, 1920.Her career as an elementary art teacher in the New Philadelphia City School System began in l952 and continued until her retirement in l978. During her career, she had contact with nearly 5, 000 New Philadelphia children as she taught art in all of the city’s elementary schools.She was a member of the Tuscarawas County College Club, the Ohio State Retired Teachers Association, and a number of women’s church groups at the Foursquare Gospel Church in Dover. She currently attended the Sugarcreek Free Methodist Church in Sugarcreek.She is survived by her four children, daughter, Jennifer L. (Thomas) Taylor of New Philadelphia, and sons, J. Douglas (Ann) Coutts of Ft. Wayne, IN, James R. Coutts and Franklin A. Coutts, both of New Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell F. Coutts, who died January 17, 1998. The couple had shared 52 years of marriage.Visitation will be Friday, July 2, 2004, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory. Services in the funeral home chapel will be conducted by Pastor Dwight Mason on Friday at 11:00 am. Pastor Glen Shedlock and Elder Glenn Carlisle will assist with the service. Betty will be laid to rest at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. Following the committal, a reception will be held at the Geib Family Center.Memorial contributions to honor Betty’s life may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
