Eleanor “Ellie” K. Hawkins, 86, of Dover and formerly of Stone Creek, died Sunday, June 08, 2014 in Country Club Retirement Campus at Dover following a recent illness.
A daughter of the late George and Agnes (Moliski) Pringle, Eleanor was born on January 14, 1928 at her childhood home on New England Road in Fairfield Township, Ohio.
Eleanor graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1945. Then on March 12, 1949 she married the love of her life, K. Gene Hawkins and together they raised two children, Ken and Joeleen. The couple shared 57 years of marriage prior to Gene’s passing on June 1, 2006.
Over the years she was employed by Warner & Swasey, Muskingum Watershed Conservancy, Woolworth’s Department Store in downtown New Philadelphia and the Tuscarawas Insurance Agency. She then retired in 1990 as a secretary at Starlight School.
She was a member of Grace Community Church at Stone Creek where she was a member of the Friendship Circle. Eleanor was also a member of the Stone Creek Garden Club.
Eleanor was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio State Buckeyes and New Philadelphia Quakers. She enjoyed needlepoint, reading and playing the piano.
She is survived by her children, Ken (Sue) Hawkins and Joeleen (Bruce) Crile both of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Lindsay (Keith) Waggoner of Canton, John (Heather) Hawkins of Miamisburg, Ohio and Talitha and Maresa Crile both of Columbus; two great granddaughters, Corinne and Alyssa Hawkins; her siblings, George Pringle of Dover, Dorothy Burkholder and James (Joann) Pringle both of New Philadelphia and Kay (Ron) Deibel of Dover; three sisters-in-law, Jane Hency of Dover, Bay Hawkins of Midvale and Gerry Freetag of Dover and many special nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, George Hency and three sisters, Clara Quillen, Mildred Riker and Sarah Ann Fielding.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Eleanor’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. in Grace Community Church at Stone Creek with Pastor Paul Houdashelt officiating. Burial will follow in Stone Creek Cemetery. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall at the church.
