Eleanor Armstrong

September 23, 1911 — June 29, 2003

ELEANOR ARMSTRONG, 91, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday evening, June 29, 2003, at Union Hospital following a weeklong illness. She was born in Glencoe, OH on September 23, 1911, a daughter of the late Ewing D. and Sarah Hart Piper.Eleanor married Carl A. Armstrong on August 11, 1938. Carl worked as a civil engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation for 53 years. The couple resided in Shadyside where Eleanor began her long teaching career. Later in 1938 they moved to New Philadelphia where she continued teaching first grade. She also taught in Mineral City and finally retired from teaching in Dover in the early 1970’s. Along with Carl, Eleanor enjoyed being close to home. They were members of Sacred Heart Church and Eleanor liked to quilt and sew. She was also an avid Cleveland Indians baseball fan. But most of all, Eleanor was a loving and giving mother, grandma and great-grandma. Carl died September 12, 2001.She is survived by daughters, Sally Armstrong and her companion, Mike Comola of Cedarville, CA and Margaret and her husband Thomas Hisrich of Tippecanoe; sons, Michael and his wife Vicki of Dover and James Armstrong of Cleveland; grandchildren, Matthew Soper and his companion, Joy Muller; Tom Hisrich, Jr., Ed and his wife Julie Hisrich, Ann Hisrich, Richard Hisrich, Carl Armstrong and his companion Tonya McCune, Sara Armstrong, Jennifer and her husband George Giganti; and one great-granddaughter, Savannah Giganti. In addition to her parents, her sister, Mary Aldrich and her brother, Miles Piper, preceded Eleanor in death.Visitation will be Wednesday evening, July 2, 2003, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 3, 2003 at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Msgr. George J. Schlegel officiating. Burial alongside her husband Carl will follow at Calvary Cemetery, New Philadelphia.Eleanor’s family asks that contributions be made to “Dress-A-Child”, c/o Beverly Hamilton, 508 Evergreen Dr., Dover, OH 44622.
