Elaine J. McClanahan, age 81, of Dover and formerly of Columbia passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009 in New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover following a long period of declining health.Born May 8, 1927 in Dover , she was the daughter of the late Herbert Brown and Josephine (Griffin) Brown Kohler. Elaine married her late husband, Charles R. McClanahan in 1945. Together, they enjoyed camping, traveling and dancing prior to his death in 1971.Elaine was a press operator for Dover Molded for 15 years. Throughout her lifetime, she was also a home health aide and a member of the Church of Christ in Dover. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting afghans, rollerskating, and playing Scrabble.Elaine is survived by her son, Richard (Laura) McClanahan of Columbia, O.; her daughter, Diana Cross of Dover; her brother, Gene (Myrtle) L. Brown of New Philadelphia; her sister, Ruth McDaniels of Cleveland; her step-sister, Helen Lute of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Terri Ellis of West Lafayette, Richard Cross Jr. and William Cross, both of New Philadelphia, Charles (Kristy) McClanahan of Massillon, Pam McClanahan of Canton, and Hunter McClanahan of Columbia; and eleven great-grandchildren complete the family.In addition to her husband, Elaine was preceded in death by her step-father, Oscar Kohler; her brother-in-law, Kenny McDaniels; her grandson, Bobby McClanahan; and three step-sisters.Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave. in Dover, on Wednesday, May 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday one hour prior to the service. A service celebrating Elaine’s life will also be held in the Geib Funeral Center on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. with Randy Chapman officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Dover Burial Park. Family and friends are invited back to the Hospitality Room at the Geib Funeral Center where a meal will be shared.Elaine’s family requests memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W. 3rd St., Dover, OH 44622.Those unable to attend are encouraged to send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.
