Edwin Robert Mathias, 85, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 23, 2018 in Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia following a lengthy illness.
A son of the late Alfred Glennen and Louise Bertha (Stalder) Mathias, Edwin was born July 1, 1932 at Dover, Ohio.
He graduated from Dover High School in 1951. Then on October 23, 1952, he entered the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. Edwin honorably served his country until October 22, 1954.
In his early years, Edwin was employed by Marsh Lumber. He then served as a Mail Carrier for the United State Postal Service at New Philadelphia and retired after 26 years of service.
Edwin was an active member of Dover Baptist Temple and he enjoyed “tinkering” around his home. He also enjoyed sports and following the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers as well as following local high school sports.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Jane (Maus) Mathias, whom he married on March 5, 1953; his children, Mark (Denise) Mathias of Toledo, Jenny (Sonny) Ramsay of Newcomerstown and Mitchell Mathias of Columbus; three granddaughters, Erin (Jay) Petrella of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, Rachel (Matt) Donegan of Nashville, Tennessee and Breanne Mathias of Denver, Colorado; a great-grandson, Aiden Petrella; two sisters, Vera (Larry) Patton of California and Janet (Bill) Avon of Strasburg; a brother, Glenn (Carol) Mathias of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Jo Anne (Howard) Byers of New Philadelphia and many nieces and nephews.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Helena Maus Sr. and three brothers-in-law, Charles, Herbert (Irene) Jr. and Billy Maus.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again one hour prior to the service on Thursday. A funeral service celebrating Edwin’s life will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. in Dover Baptist Temple with Rev. Chris Rhodes officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church immediately after the service. Burial will take place in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman on Friday at 11 am.
