Edward W. Heil, 89, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.A son of the late Albert and Elizabeth (DeKlyn) Heil, Ed was born August 27, 1920 in Dennison, Ohio.Ed graduated from St. Mary’s High School at Dennison then continued his education at The Ohio State University before graduating from John Carroll University.He was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a member of the Office of Strategic Service a forerunner of the CIA in England, France and Germany during World War II.Ed’s professional career started with his employment at Rea and Associates, and subsequently Gibb’s Coal. After the death of his father, he joined the family business at the Dr Pepper Bottling Company, secured a Pepsi-Cola Bottling appointment, and served as the President and General Manager of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Dover. Throughout his career, Ed remained interested in the agricultural community and along with late son Thomas, he owned and managed Twin City Implement. Most recently, Ed was instrumental in the development of Oak Shadows Golf Course. As an active member of the community, Ed served on the Board of Directors for the former Reeves Bank and Trust Company, the First National Bank of Dennison, the Tuscarawas County AAA, and Woodlawn Canners, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America having served as a District Chairman, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dover, the Knights of Columbus and the Dover Elks Lodge.Ed especially enjoyed being outdoors – fishing, golfing and spending time at his farm. He cherished his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them at the farm as well as attending their sporting events. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy (O’Donnell) Heil; two children, Ann (Mike) Heil Patterson of Lake Forest, Illinois and Mark (Irene) Heil of Dover; five grandchildren, Kathryn Patterson and Molly Patterson both of Lake Forest, Illinois, Michelle (Wade) Harrison of Boyne City, Michigan, Scott (Kara) Heil of New Philadelphia and John Heil of Cleveland; a great granddaughter, Kayla Harrison; a sister, Alberdine Collins of Dennison, sister-in-law Althea Heil of Akron, and a niece who lived with Dorothy and Ed, Susan (Rodney) Willard of Dennison.Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Edward Heil; four brothers and their wives, Andrew and Enid, Bernard and Eileen, Gerald and Betty, Orville and Adeline and brother Paul, and a brother-in-law, Joseph Collins.The family will receive guests on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Matthew Hoover on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Dover. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Hospitality Room of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.Contributions may be made in Ed’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
