Edward S. Gump Jr., 68, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, April 26, 2010 in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.A son of the late Edward S. Gump Sr. and the late Zonabelle (Lester) Gump Swinford, Ed was born September 17, 1941 at Steubenville, Ohio.Ed served in the United States Navy and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Facility at Naples, Italy.On July 1, 1972, Ed married the former Doris Echelberry and together the couple raised two children, Doug and Laura.Ed retired from Danner Press in 2002. He was a lifetime member of the Dover V.F.W. and was also a member of the Uhrichsville Moose Lodge. Ed enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes.Surviving are his wife, Doris Gump of the home, his son, Doug Gump of New Philadelphia; a daughter, Laura Gump of Akron; two brothers, Robert (Lynn) Gump of New Cumberland and Richard Gump of New Philadelphia and many nieces and nephews.Ed was preceded in death his parents and a brother, Clarence Swinford.The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Ed’s life will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Holmes Church Cemetery where the Dover V.F.W. Post #3463 will render military honors.The family suggests contributions be made in Ed’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406.
