Edward Merrill Penick, age 78, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family early Saturday morning, March 26, 2011 in his home.Born in Roswell, O. on October 21, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward Merrill and Violet Francis (Smitley) Penick. After completing his formal education, he joined the United States Army where he honorably served his country in the Korean War. He completed his service as a Corporal, having earned 3 battle stars.Ed enjoyed more than 46 years of employment at Harry Humphries Auto City in Dover as a car salesman. He earned the distinguished honor of “Salesman of the Year” numerous times throughout his career.Other interests of Ed’s included woodworking, photography, traveling, and fishing. He was a member of the local AA and was attending NewPointe Community Church in Dover. Most important to Ed was his family. He had a tremendous amount of love and admiration for his two daughters, Lori (Todd) App of Dover and Jade (Nick) Schwedock of Waco, Texas; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Rebekah, and Anna Kate Schwedock and Keaton Lahmers and Tyler Maffo. He will also be missed by his siblings, Jerry Penick and Carroll Meese, both of New Philadelphia.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother and his brother-in-law, Elmer Meese.Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, March 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. A service celebrating Ed’s life will be held in the funeral home’s chapel on Wednesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Burial will follow the service in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia where the New Philadelphia VFW Post #1445 will render military honors. Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, following the committal service where a meal will be shared.Memorial contributions in Ed’s memory may be directed to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W 3rd St. Dover, Ohio 44622 in thanks for their compassionate care they gave to Ed in his final days.
